Kinek Helps Students Reap the Fruits of Healthy Behaviour

Attention: Education Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Tech/Telecomm Editor QUISPAMSIS, NEW BRUNSWICK, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - May 1, 2008) - Twenty-five Grade Six students of Quispamsis Middle School (QMS) have won an afternoon getting fit while having fun at the Hurricane Youth Fitness & Wellness Centre. Kinek Technologies, Inc. (Kinek) sponsored a Fruit and Vegetable challenge for the Grade Six students at QMS. The students used Kinek's secure web-based Wellness Record to track their daily fruit and vegetable consumption during the challenge. The twenty-five students who, on average, came closest to the Canada Food Guide's recommendations for fruit and vegetables over the four week period won the chance to go to Hurricane Youth Fitness & Wellness Centre.

Kinek, a pioneer in Web 2.0 health and wellness solutions, has been actively involved with the school since October of 2007 when QMS integrated the company's interactive Wellness Record into their health curriculum. The Wellness Record allows and encourages students to track behaviours such as nutrition, sleep, screen time, and physical activity. Because the Wellness Record is available online through access with a password, students can monitor their health anytime from anywhere - all they need is access to a computer.

"Our students were very excited about participating in the challenge," commented Ann-Marie Dingee, QMS Acting Principal. "The students have been using the Wellness Record all year to track behaviours like exercise, sleep, screen time, and nutrition. Tracking their fruit and vegetables through the Wellness Record enabled students to really think about their nutritional habits. Research tells us that 75% of North Americans do not eat the recommended minimum for fruits and vegetables so everything we can do to bring nutrition to the attention of our students helps."

"We are proud to have sponsored the challenge at QMS," said John Simon, Vice President of Kinek's Health and Wellness division. "When we designed the Wellness Record, we realized that it could not just be a way to track health and wellness behaviours, the Wellness Record had to also encourage healthy changes. To that end, we have built online challenges and incentive prize draws into the Wellness Record as a way to help motivate students and other Wellness Record users."

"The choice of an afternoon at Hurricane Fitness was not an arbitrary one. This reward reinforces a message we've been communicating to the students," said Ann-Marie Dingee. "Physical activity is important and fun." "With studies showing that less than 55% of North American children meet recommended physical activity levels, the message is an important one - a message that Kinek hopes the students will carry with them long after the challenge is over. Healthy habits lead to lifelong rewards and never has this been a more important message to impart to children," concluded John Simon.

The Fruit and Vegetable challenge is just one of several health and wellness initiatives Kinek has undertaken at QMS. QMS intends to provide the Wellness Record to the Grade Six students throughout their middle school experience and plans to introduce it to new students as they enroll each year.
