King & Spalding Recruits Boyd Cloern to Its IP Practice in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - Sep 5, 2012) - King & Spalding has recruited Boyd Cloern as a partner in its Washington, D.C., office as the firm continues to expand its patent litigation practice across the United States. Cloern is the fifth patent litigator the firm has added to its IP practice in the past 16 months.

"We are very focused on expanding our IP capabilities across a number of strategic markets, including Washington, and we are excited to have Boyd join our team," said Holmes J. Hawkins, III, head of King & Spalding's intellectual property practice group. "Boyd is an outstanding patent litigator with a broad range of legal and industry experience that will be beneficial to our clients. His practice also will complement our strong Washington-based international trade and FDA practices."

Cloern joins King & Spalding from Bingham McCutchen, where he was a partner. He focuses on intellectual property and antitrust matters. Much of his recent patent litigation experience has been focused on the automotive industry, but he also has litigated patent cases in the defense, telecommunications, consumer products, semiconductor and medical devices industries. He also litigates trade secret and copyright disputes. Cloern received J.D. and B.A. degrees from the University of Kentucky.

"King & Spalding is a recognized leader in intellectual property, with both experienced trial lawyers and a deep bench of technically trained lawyers and professionals," said Cloern. "The firm's global platform and its demonstrated commitment to the IP practice made this a natural fit for me. I look forward to working with the talented IP litigators throughout the firm and contributing to the expansion of the IP litigation practice in Washington," said Cloern.

Cloern's arrival in Washington follows that of patent litigators William F. Abrams in July in Silicon Valley, Tony V. Pezzano and Michael P. Dougherty this past April in King & Spalding's New York office and Sanjeet Dutta in Silicon Valley in April 2011.

King & Spalding's patent litigators have actively been engaged in patent infringement litigation and trials on behalf of some of the best-known companies in the world for more than 25 years, including substantial experience litigating and trying ANDA cases under the Hatch-Waxman Act and cases before the International Trade Commission. The firm was ranked in the national and regional patent contentious categories of Managing Intellectual Property magazine's 2011 World IP Survey.
