Kingston Starts Decreased in the Second Quarter of 2012

KINGSTON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 10, 2012) - According to the latest preliminary data released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), total housing starts in the Kingston Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) were 128 units in the second quarter of 2012, down from 176 units in the second quarter of 2011.

"Single housing starts are beginning to return to historical levels, following a strong performance in the first three months of 2012," said Abdul Kargbo, CMHC's Kingston Market Analyst.

The first half of the year posted a decline in total housing starts across all dwelling types, with the exception of row structures. "Row or townhouse construction activity remained healthy as low mortgage rates continue to attract many first-time homebuyers," concluded Kargbo.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 65 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable housing solutions. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making informed decisions.
