Knoxville Bariatric Surgeons Touch on the Increasing Efficacy of Weight Loss Surgery

Drs. Stephen G. Boyce and K. Robert Williams Compare Weight Loss Results Witnessed at Their Knoxville Practice to a Study Reporting a Steady Improvement in the Effectiveness of Bariatric Surgery

KNOXVILLE, TN--(Marketwired - Oct 9, 2014) - According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), research data has shown a consistent improvement in both the immediate and long-term weight loss results of bariatric surgery. Based on the findings, connect -- the official news magazine of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) -- published an article1 in which a co-author of the JAMA study suggests weight loss surgery is also an effective treatment for type II diabetes, hypertension, and a variety of other conditions associated with obesity.

At the New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery in Knoxville, Dr. Stephen Boyce and Dr. K. Robert Williams have noticed similar trends among their weight loss surgery patients. In his recent blog post titled, "The Effectiveness Of Weight Loss Surgery," Dr. Boyce compares outcomes at his practice to claims made in the study. "In addition to successful weight loss, just one year after bariatric surgery I commonly see type II diabetes resolve in over 90% of patients, hypertension resolve in 75% of patients, and obstructive sleep apnea resolve in over 70% of patients." He goes on to say, however, not all bariatric surgeries offer the same degree of efficacy for every patient, so selecting the most appropriate procedure for each individual is imperative to overall success.

In a follow-up post titled, "Which Weight Loss Surgery Is Best For Me?," Dr. Boyce addresses the potential risks of bariatric surgery as well as how he helps patients decide which procedure would be the most beneficial for their specific needs. He points out that though certain risks do exist, the rate of complications that arise from bariatric surgery (10 to 17 percent, as noted in the ASMBS article) are comparable to most other major abdominal operations. Regarding his own practice, the Knoxville bariatric surgeon says, "Our complication rates for primary bariatric operations at the New Life Center for Bariatric Surgery are well below the national benchmark," which is a statistic he attributes to the thorough consultation process he and Dr. Williams employ in determining the most effective weight loss procedure to utilize.

Ultimately, Drs. Boyce and Williams always recommend their patients lead an active lifestyle complete with proper nutrition to maximize the results of their procedure. "A truly successful weight loss operation requires that patients are actively dedicated to a lifestyle change, including proper nutrition as well as vitamin and mineral supplementation. Then you will be able to enjoy your new, healthier life."
