Kobrand's Italian Portfolio Earns Five Tre Bicchieri Awards for 2013 and Best Red Wine of the Year

PURCHASE, NY--(Marketwire - December 05, 2012) -  Kobrand Wine & Spirits is proud to announce five of their Italian wines have earned 2013 Tre Bicchieri awards from Gambero Rosso. The award winning wines include Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2009, Tenuta Sette Ponti Oreno 2009, Tenuta di Nozzole Il Pareto 2009, Michele Chiarlo Barbera d'Asti La Court 2009 and Feudo Maccari Saia 2010. In addition to the five Tre Bicchieri accolades, Gambero Rosso crowned Sassicaia 2009 'Best Red Wine of the Year.' Each of these wines expresses unique terroir and the winemaking philosophy of their producers:

Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia produced in the same style with the same winemaking approach every vintage, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc earned Tre Bicchieri's "Best Red Wine of the Year" 2013. Tenuta San Guido's visionary winemaking philosophy and incomparable wines started a stylistic revolution in Italian winemaking in the late 1960s that heralded the concept of the "Super Tuscan" with its release of Sassicaia.

Sette Ponti Oreno is a rich blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot made from 15- to 20-year-old vines, named after the Oreno River that runs through the estate. Dr. Antonio Moretti, luxury good entrepreneur, began blending his own wines in 1997.

Nozzole Il Pareto is a Super Tuscan, sourced entirely from 29-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the 10-acre Il Pareto vineyard. The Folonari family began making wine in Tuscany in the 1700s. Producing exceptional expressions from Tuscany's top appellations, Tenute Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari is one of Tuscany's leading producers with 250 years of experience.

Michele Chiarlo La Court is a single-vineyard Barbera, made from grapes grown in the famed La Court vineyard in Nizza. Michele Chiarlo, established in 1956, produces some of the region's best Barberas and high-quality Barolos.

Feudo Maccari Saia is a varietal wine made from Sicily's most noble red grape, Nero d'Avola, grown on low-yielding, 20-year-old vines. Feudo Maccari is the newest estate to be launched by Sette Ponti's owner Dr. Antonio Moretti. Feudo Maccari is assembled from more than 50 separate plots, giving the wine a diverse complexity.

Gambero Rosso, an Italian food and wine magazine and publishing group, launched their Italian wine guide Vini d'Italia in 1987. Widely regarded as Italy's most authoritative guide, wines are assigned one to three glasses (bicchieri). The guide only includes wines which are deemed "above average" with the highest rating of three glasses (Tre Bicchieri) indicating an "extraordinary wine." The ratings are based upon blind tasting by independent experts. This year's tasting included 45,000 wines which the experts narrowed down to 20,000, from 2,350 wineries. Of these 20,000, only 399 were awarded Tre Bicchieri.

Members of the trade, press and consumers will be able to taste these phenomenal wines at the annual U.S. Tre Bicchieri tasting. The 2013 schedule is as follows: San Francisco (February 7), Chicago (February 12) and New York (February 15).
