Korea Veterans Association Receives Federal Support for 55th Anniversary Event

ARNPRIOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 6, 2008) - The Korea Veterans Association (Ontario Region) will commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice at a two-day event in July, with support from the Government of Canada.

On behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Cheryl Gallant, Member of Parliament for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke, announced today a contribution to the Korea Veterans Association (Ontario Region).

Funding of up to $4,400, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support a weekend in honour of Korean War Veterans. On the weekend of July 26-27, Veterans will reacquaint themselves with old comrades and share their stories with participating Army Cadets. A parade to the National Wall of Remembrance will allow all in attendance to pay their respects to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Canada. Visiting youth from Korea are also expected to participate in a ceremony.

"This event will allow us to honour a group of heroes who gave up so much to fight for the freedom of others," said Minister Thompson. "We will never forget their strength and bravery and the many sacrifices they made."

"Canadian youth will have the opportunity to hear personal accounts from Veterans," said Ms. Gallant. "The experiences and memories they share will encourage these young people to keep Remembrance alive."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through the Canada Remembers program of Veterans Affairs Canada, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
