Royal Columbian Hospital is the major referral centre for trauma, cardiac and neurosurgery cases in the Fraser Health region. Trauma cases at RCH traditionally increase in November, December and January primarily due to the increased incidence of automobile and pedestrian accidents during the holiday season. More than 1,000 patients suffering from critical illness or injury fight for life every year in RCH's Intensive Care Unit. On any given day, 30 to 40 per cent of patients in RCH's ICU are trauma patients.
