Lafayette Chiropractor Uses Spinal Adjustments to Treat Allergies

LAFAYETTE, LA--(Marketwire - Feb 5, 2012) - Dr. John Sullivan, a chiropractor who has practiced in Lafayette for 25 years, treats patients who suffer from allergies by implementing non-forceful spinal adjustments. According to the doctor and several of his patients, many of whom came in seeking help for other health problems initially, spinal adjustments have decreased their dependence on allergy and asthma medications they once relied on to get them through allergy season. Nearly one in five Americans suffer from some type of allergy, and the typical treatment for these people is to try and avoid the allergen, or use a combination of antihistamines or steroid inhalers to minimize the severity of the symptoms.

The Lafayette chiropractor said that allergies occur when the body's immune system is unbalanced. "When someone experiences an allergic reaction to something, the immune system attacks that foreign entity as if it were an enemy invader like a virus, even if that substance should have no logical, harmful effect on a healthy body," Sullivan said. "The immune system goes ballistic on some kind of pollen, or strawberries, or peanuts when it doesn't need to. And yet these allergic reactions can be life-threatening and cost people hundreds of dollars a year in pharmaceuticals that only cover the symptoms. In the end, these drugs actually dull the immune system, which endangers good health while still not solving the underlying problem."

Dr. Sullivan explained that while the allergic mechanism is still not fully understood, and may contain a genetic component, he has been able to successfully treat allergic and asthmatic patients so that they have been able to reduce or eliminate their reliance on allergy medications. According to the doctor, when the vertebrae in the neck are misaligned, they pinch nerves that not only cause neck pain, but that also inhibit normal immune function and cause other health problems. After releasing the nerves through chiropractic spinal adjustments, patients have noticed that they had fewer allergy symptoms during times when they were normally suffering.

One patient explained that she originally went to see Dr. Sullivan for arm, upper back and neck pain. The spinal adjustments helped relieve the pain, but she also noticed that her allergy symptoms did not appear a couple of months later in the spring, when she normally would have expected them.

Several other patients related similar stories about going to Dr. Sullivan for help with neck pain, and also finding relief from their allergy problems at the same time. Dr. Sullivan says that by correcting the alignment of the spine and helping patients focus on proper nutrition, many of his allergic patients no longer need their allergy medications. His approach to care with non-forceful chiropractic treatment allows Dr. Sullivan to treat patients young and old ranging in age from eight days old to ninety-two years old.

"Proper spinal alignment can get the immune system functioning normally again," he said. For more information about chiropractic treatment for allergy relief, visit the website at:
