Laguna Beach Art in Public Places Call for Artists - Request for Qualifications

LAGUNA BEACH, CA--(Marketwire - November 23, 2010) - The City of Laguna Beach is seeking applications from qualified artists to undertake a $100,000 Art in Public Places installation at its prestigious Heisler Park. Heisler Park is undergoing the final phase of an $8 million renovation to improve public access, preserve the park from erosion and improve public safety.

The park is on an 18.5 acre ocean bluff that includes beach access, walking paths, lawns, gardens and picnic areas. There are numerous ocean view benches, public art installations, a lawn bowling area, restrooms and gazebo. A marine preserve, off shore from the park, offers extensive diving and tide pools to observe marine life.

The Arts Commission is seeking an artist or artist team from California to create a sculpture garden in a grassy area measuring 23' x 50'. The art works would be inspired by and/or utilize a poem created for the park titled "Sparkle (Giggle Crack)" written by Shelley Cooper. The poem and detailed site and entry requirements are available on the City's website. The proposed art works may include multiple elements such as sculpture, sculptural seating and designs utilizing the pathways, and are not to exceed 6' in height. The deadline for submissions is January 10, 2011.

Laguna Beach has 72 pieces of public art in its collection, the oldest installed in 1933 by Ruth Peabody. Long renowned as an artist colony, today Laguna Beach is home to three art festivals, a playhouse, museum, art college and over 90 galleries. This project will be a highly anticipated installation that will complete several years of work renovating this beautiful location for future generations to enjoy.

Information on site and entry requirements is available at www.lagunabeachcity.net or spoeschl@lagunabeachcity.net.
