Laird of the Manor; Contemporary Sofas This Winter

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 16, 2011) - What could be more snug than using chic Scottish style in your home this winter?

If it's blowing a gale outside, you can hibernate in your own Highland estate, relaxing on a beautiful contemporary sofa in front of a roaring fire while enjoying a wee dram of whisky.

Look for tweed inspired fabrics, leather furniture, dark wood and heather tones.

The classic design of the Blenheim sofa in beautiful, aged effect leather is ideal for this look. It oozes charm while the antique studding, and the detail in the wooden feet and brass castors suggest the 'old money' style associated with traditional Highland homes and hunting lodges.

Either of these sofas could be accessorised with soft woollen tartan throws and a range of cushions in heather, such as the Spiga or New Bloom styles available from Barker and Stonehouse.

If leather's not your thing, look for furniture upholstered in purple fabrics. Think shades of heather, moss greens and stone, to create the Highland feel.

The Jolanda range, with its velvet fabric in a purple shade called 'elegance aubergine' is ideal. Its traditional design, with the luxurious look and feel of velvet, adds a little glamour to the theme.

Other furniture should reflect classic styles and the 'call of the wild' theme intrinsic to the Highland influence. The Antenor range with its antler inspired style is ideal.

The footstool's antler legs and hide effect, would not be out of place in any hunting lodge, and for rooms with high ceilings, the chandelier will add some wild grandeur.

For a tamer take on the style, go for classic pieces which will never go out of fashion. A dining table or coffee table in mahogany, like the Lindhurst, with brass handles and lacquered finish ooze style, status and grandeur.

A real hide rug on beautiful, stripped floor boards would be ideal, but if that's taking the theme too far for you, go for something like the Brighton rug in purple from Barker and Stonehouse. It comes in 100 per cent wool pile and guarantees a cosy feel on windswept nights.

Accessorise with classically styled items, like silver enamel picture frames, and an antique-style clock will provide a focal point for your mantelpiece or chest of drawers.
