Lake Creek Bridge Construction Starts Today, Fish Creek Thoroughfare to Traverse Woodforest Development of Montgomery County New Homes

CONROE, TX--(Marketwire - May 6, 2008) - Work begins today on a much-anticipated bridge that will complete Fish Creek Thoroughfare, providing an important north-south travel route through Montgomery County.

Once complete, Fish Creek Thoroughfare will run north through Woodforest, a new 3,000-acre master-planned development of Conroe new homes, up to FM 2854, where it currently ends. Construction begins within a year on an overpass that will traverse railroad tracks and FM 2854, providing access to State Highway 105.

Construction of the quarter-mile Lake Creek Bridge should take approximately one year to complete, said Precinct 2 Commissioner Craig Doyal, who has spearheaded mobility projects in the region. The contractor for the $4.3 million project is Smith & Company of Conroe, Texas.

While bridge construction is underway, the final section of Fish Creek Thoroughfare, about 1.5 miles, will be paved. The county has already finished improvement work on all existing sections of the roadway, increasing the stabilization of the sub-grade and widening lanes to 12 feet with an additional three-foot shoulder on each side of the road.

"I am excited to see this project finally underway," Commissioner Doyal said. "It will be a tremendous asset to Montgomery County as well as the entire region, as it provides a north-south alternative to Interstate 45."

Lake Creek Bridge and the Fish Creek Thoroughfare extension have been part of the county's mobility plan since 1985, with funding secured through a 2004 bond election. Necessary construction permits for the bridge, which crosses a flood plain, took nearly two years to obtain.

Woodforest Development, Inc., a subsidiary of The Johnson Development Corp., is working with county officials and contributing financially to the cost of Fish Creek Thoroughfare, building an additional two lanes on some portions of the roadway traveling through the development. Completion of all road construction is slated to coincide with the May 2009 opening of Lake Creek Bridge.

"Fish Creek Thoroughfare is critical to the success of Woodforest and to the safety and mobility of Montgomery County residents," said Virgil Yoakum, general manager of Woodforest. Current access to the community is via Honea-Egypt Road, which was not designed for the level of traffic it currently accommodates, Yoakum said.

Woodforest's master plan provides for a community with 5,500 residential units, retail and mixed-use properties, places of worship, schools and public safety services. The property includes lakes and streams, and the plan incorporates green belts, nature preserves and a 27-hole golf course. By the end of 2008, 240 home sites in the first phase of development should be completed. Homes will be priced from the upper $200,000s to $1 million.
