Land Across River From Jamestown Colony to Sell at Auction

JAMESTOWN, VA--(Marketwire - October 14, 2010) -  In 1635, 24 colonists followed William Swann to the shoreline directly across the river from Jamestown to form a colony that became known as Swann's Point. And on Monday, Nov. 15, approximately 1,689 acres of the land will sell at auction.

"When you talk about history, it doesn't get any better than this," said Jim Woltz, president of Woltz & Associates, which will conduct the auction. "From the bluff on this property, you can see the monument on Jamestown Island as well as the replica of the ships that brought the first settlers," he said. "Better still, it has to be quite a feeling standing on your own land and knowing our nation's very first settlers walked there more than four centuries ago."

The land looks surprisingly like it did in 1635, with almost 370 acres used for farming and much of the land consisting of woodlands. It includes more than three miles of frontage on the James River and on the navigable Gray's Creek.

But the complexion of the land could change depending on who buys it. The property will sell in five tracts, ranging from 170 acres to 509 acres.

"Some of this land is suitable for incredible estates, and some is highly productive cropland and timberland. Bidders will be allowed to bid on any combination of tracts or on the entirety. About 200 acres will sell absolute, with no minimum or reserve bid, so there's also the opportunity to get some incredible land at a great price," said Woltz.
