Las Cruces Albertsons Workers Win Fair Contract With Grocery Workers Union

Albertsons Meat Department Employees Secure Union Contract

LAS CRUCES, NM -- (MARKET WIRE) -- April 3, 2007 -- Albertsons meat department employees at two Las Cruces stores have a fair contract with the company, negotiated by United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1564. One hundred percent of workers voted to accept the three-year contract at a meeting on March 29.

When Albertsons finally sold in June of last year to Cerberus LLC, workers were optimistic that the new Albertsons would do the right thing for their employees -- agree to a contract with union benefits that would cost workers and the company less. And after some tough negotiations, Albertsons employees finally have a fair contract. The difference between what workers previously received and what they will get under the new Union contract is impressive.

For instance, Albertsons workers will finally have the secure retirement they've worked so hard for, with employees now able to take part in a 100 percent company-paid pension plan. Workers will now have access to quality, affordable health care as well. A worker who previously paid $45 a week for health care will now pay nothing at all, and deductibles of $350 per person have gone down to $150 per person and $300 per family.

"These Albertsons employees have worked hard to make their company successful," said Greg Frazier, UFCW Local 1564 Organizing Director. "They deserve affordable health care, a secure retirement, and wages that pay the bills -- and with their Union contract, they finally have all of those things."

The UFCW represents 1.4 million members, with nearly one million in the grocery industry. Over 400,000 UFCW grocery workers across the country are negotiating new contracts throughout 2007, and have joined together in a national campaign to improve jobs in the grocery industry.
