Las Vegas Eye Doctor Reveals Leading Astigmatism Treatments

Dr. Helga Pizio Discusses the Causes of and Treatments for Astigmatism, and Touches on the Influence of Cataracts With Regard to Vision Correction Methods

LAS VEGAS, NV--(Marketwired - May 27, 2015) - Due to the unique shape of each person's eyes, nearly everyone has some degree of astigmatism, announces Las Vegas eye doctor Helga Pizio, MD. She explains that eyes were designed to provide vision clarity by having a round shape, which can focus light evenly; however, most patients' eyes are somewhat spherical or oval-shaped, and as a result symptoms ranging from mild to severe can occur, depending on the level of astigmatism present. While many individuals have such minimal symptoms as to be unnoticeable, she says that other people may suffer from significantly impaired vision. Fortunately, she also indicates that there are numerous effective treatment options available, including surgical and non-surgical methods.

Educating patients on what astigmatism is and how this condition affects vision is an essential part of the consultation process, Dr. Pizio indicates. She notes that many patients can confuse astigmatism with myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness); however, astigmatism can make an object appear blurry regardless of distance. Similarly, she notes that while an irregularly shaped cornea typically will be the cause of this condition, a distorted lens can also contribute to blurred eyesight. A variety of frequently asked questions about astigmatism can be addressed during the initial consultation, she affirms, as well as more person-specific concerns.

Patients with significant astigmatism may experience more than distorted vision, Dr. Pizio reveals; they may also develop headaches, light sensitivity, and eye discomfort. If a person requires astigmatism treatment, she says there is an abundant selection of options, from corrective lenses to laser technology, from which to choose, depending on the anatomic needs and desired goals of the individual. If cataracts are present, she says that cataract surgery may be able to help reduce blurriness caused by astigmatism as well, as the natural lens will be replaced. Other options for individuals undergoing cataract surgery include Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRI), which she indicates can be performed during the cataract procedure using a highly precise laser.

Ultimately, Dr. Pizio seeks to provide an informative resource on astigmatism to help educate patients researching this common vision condition. By exploring all available treatment options, she says more individuals will be able to find the best solution for their needs and enjoy improved visual clarity.
