Last Call for Entries: Vodafone Americas Foundation's Sixth Annual Wireless Innovation Project Competition Closes on February 3

Applicant Numbers Increase Sevenfold for Competition That Has Awarded More Than $2 Million for Wireless and Mobile Innovations With Social Impact

REDWOOD CITY, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 21, 2014) - The Vodafone Americas Foundation™ today announced that the approaching deadline for applications to its sixth annual Wireless Innovation Project™ (WIP) is February 3. Since its inception in 2009, WIP has provided funding for a range of mobile and wireless technology innovations, awarding more than $2 million to universities, not-for-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations. WIP offers applicants the opportunity to win from a total prize fund of $600,000 for innovative mobile solutions that have potential to solve critical global issues.

The increased number of WIP applicants for the 2014 competition is further evidence of the worldwide impact mobile innovation is having in creating solutions for social good. WIP was designed to identify those mobile technology advances that address critical issues around the world and have demonstrated potential for replication and large-scale impact.

"The Wireless Innovation Project awards were established to recognize mobile technology's potential to dramatically improve lives through innovations in areas such as education, health, economic development and disaster relief. The awards also recognize the unsung heroes behind these applications," said June Sugiyama, director of Vodafone Americas Foundation. "With the help of WIP, our winners achieve the long-term goal of taking their products to market, enabling their innovations to reach those who need them the most."

WIP winners, such as CellScope, CelloPhone, Netra, InSight and ColdTrace, have all received additional funding that has enabled them to further develop and grow their businesses, increase their employee count, and develop additional products and services. Many of the recognized innovations, whether already in the market or in beta testing, are already impacting people and countries around the world.

"Participating in the Vodafone Americas Foundation Wireless Innovation Project propelled our growth and success," said Erik Douglas, co-founder and CEO of CellScope, the developer of the smartphone device that allows users to visualize, record and transmit images of the middle ear. "Not only were we able to gain additional recognition in the investment community, we were also able to get our product to market much faster than we had initially anticipated. It is definitely in the best interest of entrepreneurs and innovation teams alike to consider submitting for this high-caliber award."

Of the previous WIP winners:
