Latest OffTheGridNews Podcast Highlights Life-Saving Attributes of Solar Generator in Post Earthquake Haiti

THOMSON, IL--(Marketwire - December 27, 2010) - In the most recent podcast launched by, hosts Bill Heid and Brian Brawdy welcome Janet Ross, president and co-founder of Heart of God International Ministries, along with David Young, executive director of the all-volunteer 501c3 not-for-profit organization.

At the heart of the conversation are the organization's ongoing relief efforts in post-earthquake Haiti along with an act of charity that Heart of God has credited with saving hundreds of lives.

Young describes the absolute helplessness that existed following the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince that left as many as 300,000 dead. With a strong military background that included a recent tour in Afghanistan, Young was quick to point out that the level of despair and lawlessness in Haiti was greater than what he encountered in the war-torn areas where he served. Yet the conversation with OTGN didn't focus on the negative but rather the incredible power of Providence and the importance of preparation.

While Young's military training certainly aided in implementing security measures to protect hundreds of displaced Haitians from armed gangs prepared to murder for food, the Lieutenant Colonel provides Heid with a telling story that reaffirms the belief that a simple gesture can save lives.

That story involves a solar generator from MySolarBackup that was donated by Solutions from Science, a company started by Heid. Young provides example after example of how the solar generator, used when most of the island was without electricity, provided an invaluable communication line and perhaps more telling, the ability to provide clean drinking water.

With the solar generator, Young says the Heart of God International Ministries were able to run a water filtration system that provided clean drinking water to not just the orphaned children that the organization was caring for but the surrounding community. The timing of Heid's gift and its implementation came just before a serious cholera outbreak hit, an outbreak that has claimed hundreds of lives and sickened thousands more.

As important as the story of survival, Young emphasizes the importance of preparation, and this is something that both Heid and Brawdy address when they mention the goal of OTGN isn't to focus on the negative but to ensure people have a plan in place when the negative happens.
