Latino Author Robert Renteria Wins Prestigious Award at 5th Annual Chicago Latino Network Gala 2010

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - October 21, 2010) -  Robert Renteria has been voted Chicago Latino Professional of the Year by the Chicago Latino Network, with over 46,000 members. Network members were asked to choose the winner from four finalists based on consecutive years of service to community, professional, educational and business accomplishments. Over six thousand voters participated in the selection process. Renteria's award was a result of his dedication to help youth of all ages, races and economic backgrounds make better choices, focus on education and avoid delinquency, gangs, drugs and violence.

Through his book, From the Barrio to the Board Room and curriculum that meets Illinois Standards for Education, Renteria has mentored thousands of students and young adults throughout Chicagoland and across the United States. Those who read the book are energized and re-focused by his story of growing up in the barrio of East Los Angeles, surviving a near death accident as a young boy to dropping out of school and running the streets. At the age of 17 he made the decision to turn his life around, return to school and join the military. After serving as an elite soldier in the United States Army, Robert moved to Chicago and six years later was promoted to Vice President of a New York Stock Exchange traded company. Since then he has opened several successful businesses. And being consistent with his philosophy of "climbing the next mountain" he wrote the From the Barrio book to help mentor others so they can ride the fast track to success, instead of diverting into some of the pitfalls that can prevent repeated success as an adult.

Renteria says, "This book is a teaching tool of 'how to.' It tells the stories of some of the poor choices I made growing up, then the steps I took to overcome and be successful. It's a message of hard work, perseverance and commitment."

For four years the gala has sold out and has included speakers such as Henry Cisneros, Executive Chairman, CityView; Fernando Espuelas, President & CEO, VOY, LLC; Monica Gadsby, CEO, SMG Multicultural; U.S. Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (D-CA); and Juan Tornoe, Executive Vice President of Hispanic Trending among others.
