This year during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), you will swear it is Shark Week. Award-winning director and conservationist, Rob Stewart, is celebrating the launch of his new not-for-profit organization at one of the coolest parties: 100% Fin Free: An Evening For Sharks.

On the heels of the landmark legislation to protect sharks in California in large part inspired by his documentary, Sharkwater, Stewart, a Toronto native who launched his much-acclaimed film at TIFF five years ago, is working closely with a group of lawmakers and conservationists to bring sharks into the forefront. The team has introduced legislation to ban the sale and possession of shark fins in Toronto and strives to make Canada a leader in the fight to save sharks. "With up to 73,000,000 sharks killed each year for their fins and some regional populations down by 98%, the 'Fin Free' campaign could not be any more timely," said Stewart.

More than just a movie, Sharkwater has become a movement rallying the world around unlikely, but charismatic species. Sharkwater resulted in massive change for sharks, brought an incredibly passionate team together, and inspired Stewart to create United Conservationists (UC), a revolutionary non-profit committed to inspiring and enabling the same types of successes on a much broader scale.

Stewart will be hosting a fundraiser, on September 14th at the legendary ULTRA, to launch United Conservationists, in support of the Fin Free campaign. Attended by celebrity guests, conservation allies as well as city councilors responsible for introducing legislation to make Toronto Fin Free. The UC team will also be announcing their national campaign strategy.

With all proceeds from the event benefiting United Conservationists and their campaign to make Canada Fin Free, many sponsors have joined their cause. TRIBUTE.CA, SKYY vodka, DrinkMe, Molson Coors, Notable.ca, and ElectriCITY Events are just a few of the companies who have stepped up to the launch. Party goers will be treated to live performances by Mia Martina, Massari, Danny Fernandes and Justin Nozuka featuring DJ James Doman and guest DJ sets from DJ Shine (programmer for Nelly Furtado, Jully Black), and Bikini.

Tickets are available at finfree.eventsbot.com.
