Laurentian University's Flagship Sport Administration Program Celebrates 35 Years

Keynote speaker: Richard Pound of World Anti-Doping Agency

SUDBURY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 5, 2007) - Laurentian University's School of Sports Administration (SPAD) will celebrate its 35th anniversary at a gala event on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Toronto's Hockey Hall of Fame. The evening's events will feature keynote speaker Richard Pound, chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency, International Olympic Committee member and an honorary doctorate recipient in sports administration from Laurentian University.

"The strength of this 35th-anniversary celebration is that it's been spearheaded by our alumni, from recent graduates to more 'seasoned' sports administrators and business people," said Norm O'Reilly, director of the SPAD program. "The objective of the evening is to celebrate our history, to raise funds for student scholarships and to launch a new and exciting era of the SPAD program."

The SPAD program remains Canada's only sport management program offering a bachelor of commerce degree. The limited-enrolment program has seen its graduates excel in sports and business across Canada, North America and around the world.

More than 200 alumni will join Laurentian University president Judith Woodsworth for the evening. Event sponsors, which have all benefited from the SPAD program, include Frito-Lay Canada, RBC, the Toronto Blue Jays and Great West Life.

A sampling of SPAD's 850-plus alumni is attached, but they include Ken Derrett of the National Football League's San Diego Chargers, Lane MacAdam of Canadian Heritage/Sport Canada, as well as others who hold positions with the Toronto Blue Jays, Ottawa Senators, Canadian Olympic Committee, Hockey Canada, National Basketball Association China, NFL Canada, Optime International Inc., IMG, PepsiCo and Frito-Lay.
