Law Society Makes Top Employers List for Seventh Consecutive Year

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 20, 2012) - For the seventh consecutive year, the Law Society of Upper Canada has been selected as one of the Greater Toronto Area's (GTA) Top Employers as part of an annual competition to identify employers with exemplary work environments.

"We are thrilled to once again be recognized as an industry leader - it's an important validation of our efforts to employ best practices," Law Society Chief Executive Officer, Robert G.W. Lapper, Q.C., said. "As the regulator of Ontario's legal profession, the Law Society strives to cultivate a thriving workforce to ensure we can provide high quality professional service to the public, lawyers and paralegals.

The designation recognizes leading employers in the City of Toronto and the regional municipalities of York, Halton, Peel and Durham. The competition was open to private and public sector employers of any size, with a head office or principal place of business within the GTA.

Evaluation was based on a standard set of criteria, including: (1) physical workplace; (2) work atmosphere and social; (3) health, financial and family benefits; (4) vacation and time off; (5) employee communications; (6) performance management; (7) training and skills development; and (8) community involvement.

In choosing finalists, competition organizers at Mediacorp Canada, the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers, compare employers to other organizations within the same field to determine which offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs.

The award distinguishes the following Law Society programs and policies:

  • an array of alternative work arrangements, including flexible scheduling, telecommuting, shortened and compressed work week options;

  • tuition subsidies for employees taking courses at outside institutions, in-house and online training programs, formal mentoring and leadership training;

  • parental leave top-up programs for employees who are new mothers, fathers or adoptive parents (up to 93% of salary for 17 weeks);

  • retirement planning assistance and employer contribution to a defined contribution pension plan.

Reasons for selecting the Law Society as one of the Top Employers can be found on Mediacorp's eluta website http://www.eluta.ca/top-employer-law-society-of-upper-canada.

"I am proud to share this award with the Law Society's highly-skilled staff who continues to make this such a great place to work," Lapper said. "Their hard work and dedication is sincerely appreciated."
