Law Society Regulatory Proceedings for February 2011

Attention News Editors:

The Law Society of Upper Canada regulates the lawyers and paralegals of Ontario in the public interest. The Law Society ensures that all lawyers and licensed paralegals in Ontario meet standards of learning, professional competence and professional conduct that are appropriate for the legal services provided.

As part of this mandate, the Law Society's Hearing and Appeal Panels recently heard the following matters. Hearing and Appeal Panels are responsible for determining the appropriate disposition of cases.

Peter Alan Athersych (1984), of the City of North Bay
Decision: The Lawyer is suspended for two months starting immediately and continuing indefinitely until he has met specified conditions to the satisfaction of the Director of Professional Regulation.

Charles Ato Amissah-Ocran (1998) of the City of Brampton
Decision: The Lawyer's licence to practice law is suspended on an interlocutory basis until specified events occur.

Ann Bruce (2008), of the City of Hamilton
Decision: The Lawyer is not to appear in any court or take on new clients pending determination of the motion for an interlocutory suspension.

Peter Brian Budd (1988), of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer's appeal from the Decision and Order of the hearing panel dated December 17, 2009 was dismissed.

Brent Richard Burns, of the City of Peterborough
Decision: The Applicant's motion, to set aside the abandonment of his application for a Class L1 licence, is dismissed.

Suzy de Jesus Dos Santos, Paralegal Applicant, of the City of Toronto
Decision: The appeal of the Decision and Order of the hearing panel of August 28, 2009 is dismissed.

Christopher Chiao-Chung Tan (1992), of the City of Ottawa
Decision: The Lawyer is reprimanded.

Keith Louis Gordon (1993), of Kahnawake, Quebec
Decision: The licensee is suspended for six months, to start at the end of the current two administrative suspensions, and to continue indefinitely until the licensee has complied with a specified term to the satisfaction of the Director of Professional Regulation.

John Gilbert Harding (1965), of the City of London
Decision: The Lawyer is suspended for 1 month, commencing February 14, 2011 and continuing indefinitely thereafter until specified conditions are met.

Ali Atta Hussain (2002), of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer shall be suspended for a period of four months, effective March 1, 2011.

Hersch Harry Kopyto, of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Paralegal Applicant was ordered to pay costs of $10,000.

Ari Benjamin Kulidjian (1994), of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Lawyer shall be reprimanded.

Mireille Simone Jocelyne Marie Landry (1999) d'Ottawa 
Décision : L'avocate est assujettie à une amende de 4 000 $ et à une réprimande. Elle rembourse à sa cliente, L.R., la somme de 3 729,45 $, dans les quarante-cinq jours de la présente ordonnance.

Severin Nkolla Ndema Moussa (2003) of the City of Ottawa
Decision: The lawyer is suspended for a month and a half starting January 16, 2011. The suspension will continue indefinitely until specified conditions are met.

Carla Pereira (2008), of the City of Toronto
Decision: The Paralegal is reprimanded.

Paul Ross (1967), of the Town of Goderich
Decision: The Appeal from the April 22, 2010 Decision and Order of the hearing panel is allowed. Particulars 1 and 2 are dismissed. The proceedings related to Particular 3 are converted into an invitation to attend. Once the invitation to attend has taken place, Particular 3 will be dismissed.

Stanley James Thomas (1975), of the City Sudbury
Decision: The Lawyer shall be reprimanded.

Diana Young (2002), of the City of Toronto
Decision: The lawyer was ordered to pay costs of $15,750 within one year of January 14, 2011.
