BACKGROUND:

The Canadian International Council (CIC) honours a distinguished international figure with the CIC Globalist of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual who has shown leadership and innovation on the international stage throughout his or her career. This year, the CIC is recognizing Dr. Lawrence H. Summers, who will share his candid insights on the global economy at a gala dinner in Toronto on April 9, 2014.

During the past two decades, Dr. Summers has served in a series of senior policy positions in Washington, D.C., including the 71st Secretary of the Treasury for President Clinton, Director of the National Economic Council for President Obama and Vice President of Development Economics and Chief Economist of the World Bank.

As Director of the White House National Economic Council and Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, Dr. Summers served as a key economic decision-maker in the Obama administration. The Economist magazine referred to the "Summers Doctrine" as defining the response to the global financial crisis: "markets should allocate capital, labour and ideas without interference, but sometimes markets go haywire, and must be counteracted forcefully by government." Upon his departure from the White House, President Obama said, "I will always be grateful that at a time of great peril for our country, a man of Larry's brilliance, experience and judgment was willing to answer the call and lead our economic team."

Lawrence H. Summers is currently the Charles W. Eliot University Professor and President Emeritus of Harvard University.
