Lawrence Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Wilfredo T. Laboy Receives AASA Humanitarian Award

LAWRENCE, MA--(Marketwire - February 20, 2009) - Lawrence Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Wilfredo T. Laboy has been named a recipient of the Effie Hall Jones Humanitarian Award. Sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the award recognizes AASA members who exemplify the professional qualities of advocacy, support, mentorship and encouragement of diversity in educational leadership.

The award honors the memory of Dr. Effie H. Jones -- a teacher, counselor, school administrator and organizer of the Office of Minority Affairs at AASA. She was profiled in the film "Women at the Top" for her groundbreaking work with women who aspired to the superintendency. Jones planned, organized, lectured, wrote grants, petitioned and did whatever was necessary to elevate the status of minorities and women in education. Because of her commitment to diversity, AASA and the field of school system leadership have become richer, more complex and more accessible to a wide range of qualified educators.

Dr. Laboy was selected as a winner of the award by a group of his peers, appointed by the president of AASA. An outspoken leader in the Latino Community and a renowned advocate for diversity in leadership, Dr. Laboy is past president of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS) and a member of the AASA Executive Committee.

"Superintendent Laboy's passion for fostering up-and-coming educational leaders of diverse backgrounds has had a profound impact on education in Lawrence -- where we have a significant Latino population -- as well as on a national scale," said Lawrence Mayor Michael Sullivan. "We are proud of Dr. Laboy's accomplishments and we are very pleased that his contributions are being recognized by a group of his peers from the American Association of School Administrators."

Dr. Laboy and the other winners of the award will be honored at a special luncheon on Saturday, February 21, at AASA's National Conference on Education, San Francisco, California.
