Lawson Introduces Student Activity Management Application to Help K-12 School Districts Improve Financial Management

Hillsborough County Public Schools Among First to Use Solution to Help Increase Financial Transparency and Better Serve Students

ST. PAUL, MN--(Marketwire - Aug 31, 2011) - Lawson Software, an Infor affiliate, today announced the launch of Lawson Student Activity Management, a new application designed to help K-12 school districts more accurately track monies for student fees and activities. The solution, which can be used with the Lawson Enterprise Financial Management suite, provides consolidated views of student activity balances in an easy-to-use format, even for those with little or no background in accounting. Lawson Student Activity Management is now generally available.

Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) in Tampa, Fla., is the first school district to begin using the solution. HCPS is the eighth-largest school district in the United States with more than 15,400 certified teaching personnel in 254 schools serving approximately 200,000 students. Lawson Student Activity Management will replace an outdated application for tracking student fees that has been in use since the mid-1990s. The new application will help the District better align activity fee data with its overall financial operations.

"Hillsborough County Public School's vision is to become the nation's leader in developing successful students, and we're constantly looking for ways to improve how we operate," said David Steele, chief information and technology officer for HCPS. "Lawson Student Activity Management aligns with the Lawson Enterprise Financial Management and Human Capital Management suites we're already using to give us a more complete view of factors affecting our financial operations. Having this additional visibility will help us gain a more accurate account of the resources at our disposal so we can better serve and develop our student population."

HCPS is currently using Lawson Student Activity Management in more than ten schools, with plans to roll the solution out to the broader district. Specifically, the solution will help HCPS achieve the following:

  • Consolidate accounts across their district
  • Create transparency across all schools
  • Obtain timely and secure data to help mitigate loss risk
  • Simplify year-end reporting

"Schools small and large across the United States have reported errors in student activity funds management and even embezzlement cases with losses ranging from thousands of dollars to more than a million dollars. This makes it even more important to increase controls on the management of collected monies," said Brian Murphy, vice president & general manager, Public Sector for Lawson. "When schools track student activity funds manually, which amounts to significant dollar amounts at larger school districts like HCPS, there are oftentimes inadequate controls in place. The Lawson Student Activity Management application is another tool that school districts can use in their efforts to help safeguard against the misappropriation of funds by constantly monitoring flow so that both prevention and detection of theft are possible. Having a tool that can assist with better controls helps decision makers realize savings and achieve better financial transparency."
