LCBO Raises Funds and Awareness for Parkinson Canada

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - May 18, 2016) - Starting May 22, the public can help support Canadians living with Parkinson's disease by making a donation at any of the more than 650 LCBO stores throughout Ontario. Donation boxes for Parkinson Canada will be displayed at LCBO checkout counters until June 18. Additionally, watch for "the nose knows," an in-store poster campaign generating public awareness about one of the surprising early indicators of Parkinson's disease -- the loss of your sense of smell.

More than 40,000 women and men in Ontario from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds are affected by Parkinson's, a progressive brain disease. Parkinson's changes almost every aspect of daily living including movement, ability to smell, mood, speech, eating and drinking, sleep and thinking processes. Parkinson Canada will invest the funds raised through the LCBO donation boxes in education, advocacy and research initiatives and to fund its more than 75 support groups in Ontario.

"We want to thank LCBO's generous customers and supportive staff who help us raise significant funds and increase public awareness, in a highly cost-effective manner, through their network of stores across the province," says Joyce Gordon, CEO, Parkinson Canada. "These funds help us to greatly touch the lives of those living with Parkinson's now and provide hope for a future where Canadians will not have to face Parkinson's, thanks to a cure."

"As a socially responsible community-minded retailer, LCBO is pleased to partner with Parkinson Canada and support a variety of worthy causes through the Giving Back In Our Community fundraising program," says LCBO Acting President & CEO George Soleas. "Through the generosity of LCBO customers and the support of our staff, we help improve the lives of countless Ontarians and make a difference in communities across Ontario."

Parkinson Canada is one of 28 provincial and numerous local charities that will benefit from LCBO's province-wide donation box program in 2016. In 2014, LCBO raised a total of more than $9.5 million for charities through special programs and initiatives, of which $8.8 million was raised through in-store fundraising. In addition, LCBO's annual dividend transfer to the Ontario government, which totaled $1.805 billion in fiscal year 2014-15 ending March 31, 2015, excluding taxes, supports a wide range of important government programs, services and priorities, including health care and education.

Parkinson Canada gratefully acknowledges the public for its support when shopping at their local LCBO store from May 22 to June 18.
