Leading North American Telco Turns to DigitalRoute Usage Management for Billshock Prevention

BARCELONA, SPAIN--(Marketwired - Feb 22, 2016) - A leading North American communications company has deployed Usage Management by DigitalRoute, the leading provider of data integration and management solutions globally, to address a number of critical challenges including rapid new service launches and bill shock prevention.

The carrier had for some time been aware of a need to introduce real-time capabilities in its B/OSS. However, with a focus on a postpaid customer base, real-time product offerings had historically been a lower priority. But, with the explosion of customer data usage as a result of the introduction of smart phones and investments in LTE technology, the carrier realized that there was huge market potential for 'hybrid plans'.

To offer these, IT systems have to detect customer state and activities in real-time, then offer 'products' that align with these activities when needed and measure and control usage in real-time too. Such products closely follow the 'pre-paid' service model. Added to this, the need to address real-time became more urgent when new rules to 'control' data usage and prevent customers from experiencing 'bill shock' became the subject of regulatory intervention.

The solution DigitalRoute delivered to address the challenges is based on its Billing Mediation product, with full real-time capabilities and Usage Management extension. These provide real-time and batch interfaces to the network and back-office including subscriber provisioning, flow based charging, online credit control, real-time quota consumption reporting and batch oriented usage reporting exports. The solution was implemented in approximately six months.

With DigitalRoute technology now in place, the carrier is able to turn a seemingly challenging regulatory requirement into a positive business outcome by using its new platform to launch 'hybrid' plans that can be targeted towards meeting varying customer needs as well as addressing situations that require enabling customers to make decisions in real-time on their mobile devices.

Said Lars Mansson, CTO, DigitalRoute: "This Usage Management deployment demonstrates how mediation can be a hub of progress for existing B/OSS stack(s), provide services innovation and positive change within the data center. For this customer, it is not an exaggeration to say DigitalRoute is powering the future."

DigitalRoute CEO Johan Bergh added: "I am delighted to continue to grow DigitalRoute's family of customers. Usage Management is making a significant impact in a rapidly evolving service market and its ability to support telcos in a variety of challenges points to the growing centrality of mediation's role within the BSS stack."
