Leading on Sustainability, VHA Member Hospitals Receive Practice GreenHealth Environmental Excellence Awards

IRVING, TX--(Marketwire - April 6, 2011) - VHA Inc., the national health care network, announced that 45 of its member hospitals and health care systems received Practice GreenHealth 2011 Environmental Excellence Awards. VHA members received awards across several categories recognizing both new and established leaders in health care environmental sustainability. Novation, VHA's supply contracting company, also was honored with Practice GreenHealth's Champion for Change Award for the eighth consecutive year.

"At VHA, we know firsthand the challenges and importance of developing an impactful sustainability program through our own Corporate Citizenship & Sustainability Program, and congratulate the VHA member hospitals for this well-deserved recognition," said Colleen Risk, VHA executive vice president. "We are proud of the hard work our members are doing to raise the bar when it comes to providing sustainable, affordable and quality care," said Risk.

The Environmental Excellence Awards are given as part of CleanMed, an annual conference that allows leaders from across health care to share best practices and tools in environmental sustainability. VHA helped sponsor this year's CleanMed that concluded today in Phoenix, Ariz., and offered tours of an Ascent Reprocessing Facility, where attendees saw firsthand the steps involved in single-use device (SUD) reprocessing, including pre-cleaning, sterilization, function-testing and packaging.

"Safely reprocessing single-use devices is an important sustainability innovation," said Terri Scannell, VHA's director of corporate citizenship and sustainability. "By partnering with CleanMed, VHA is advancing environmental sustainability efforts in health care and spreading the word about safe and high-quality programs."

VHA also is sharing innovative programs through its VHA Sustainability Member Collaboration website, a new site that provides a range of sustainability resources, including tips for creating and sustaining a comprehensive and integrated sustainability program, blueprints for developing an organizational "Green Team" to champion efforts, and ways to reduce environmental footprint through recycling and improved energy efficiency. Most materials on the site are provided by VHA member hospitals, including some of the Practice GreenHealth Environmental Excellence Award winners.

"VHA member hospitals are a great source of expertise and knowledge about sustainability programs that are working on the ground. We developed the VHA Sustainability Member Collaboration site to share this expertise so that even more hospitals can establish and maintain successful sustainability programs," said Scannell.
