Leading Private PaaS Platform Provider ActiveState Joins OASIS

Group Leading Charge to Enhance Portability of Cloud Applications

VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwire - Dec 7, 2011) - ActiveState, the dynamic language experts offering solutions for Perl, Python, Tcl and other web languages, has announced today that it become a member of Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS). In addition, Diane Mueller, ActiveState Director, Enterprise Product Management, has been invited to join the OASIS Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) Technical Committee focusing on enhancing portability of cloud applications and services along with representatives from other leading cloud vendors including IBM, CA Technologies, Citrix and Red Hat.

By increasing service and application portability in a vendor-neutral ecosystem, the OASIS TOSCA Technical Committee will be working to enhance the portability of cloud applications and services, ensure smoother migration of existing applications to the cloud and more consumer choice.

TOSCA will enable the interoperable description of application and infrastructure cloud services, the relationships between parts of the service, and the operational behavior of these services (e.g., deploy, patch, shutdown) -- independent of the supplier creating the service, and any particular cloud provider or hosting technology. TOSCA will also make it possible for higher-level operational behavior to be associated with cloud infrastructure management.

"We are excited to roll up our sleeves and work alongside leading vendors such as CA, EMC, Citrix, Red Hat and SAP AG to ensure portability of cloud applications and services," said Diane Mueller. "ActiveState is committed to ensuring our Stackato Platform-as-a-Service solution is infrastructure- and hypervisor-agnostic. We want to ensure that our customers enjoy flexibility and freedom to move their applications from one cloud infrastructure provider to another."

With their commitment to being IaaS and Hypervisor-agnostic and by providing the widest available choice in languages, frameworks, and clouds for developers to build, test, run, and manage their applications, ActiveState's Stackato Private PaaS defines a new level of choice and openness in the PaaS market.

ActiveState Stackato is a private PaaS solution enabling rapid cloud deployment for Java, Python, Ruby, PHP, Perl, Node.js, Scala, and Clojure applications that can be deployed within the enterprise. Stackato delivers the power of PaaS either on-premise with a private internal cloud behind a corporate firewall (like one powered by vSphere or other hypervisor), or one hosted with a 3rd party IaaS provider such as Amazon EC2.

With Stackato, which is built on open source technologies, ActiveState has been playing a leadership role in the development of cloud computing through a number of initiatives such as:

Cloud Foundry: ActiveState is the community lead for Python in the Cloud Foundry open source project, and actively participates in the Cloud Foundry open source project;

Open Virtualization Alliance (OVA): ActiveState joined other leading virtualization and cloud solution providers in order to further their commitment to work with the widest array of hypervisor and infrastructure solutions possible;

OpenStack: ActiveState joined OpenStack™ founding member, Rackspace® Hosting, and over 100 other companies to continue to enhance OpenStack platform and ensure that Stackato can be deployed on the widest array of infrastructure platforms, providing the options that enterprises demand.

ActiveState Stackato is currently in Open Beta. Developers, IT managers, and cloud administrators can download Stackato as a Micro Cloud (VM) or trial it in a sandbox on Amazon EC2: http://www.activestate.com/cloud.
