Leading SmartWay Practitioner, Celadon Group, Provides Customers With an Expansive Service, in Business Review USA

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - Apr 12, 2012) - In a report in Business Review USA, senior company officials talk about the benefits Celadon Group, Inc. of Indianapolis has reaped since becoming an Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay partner in 2005. The EPA initiative identifies measures to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution from the transportation supply chain industry.

Established by Steve Russell in 1985 with a single contract to service the then Chrysler Corporation's transportation needs, Celadon Group today stands as the ninth largest truckload carrier and one of the top international shippers in the United States with annual revenue exceeding $550 million. The company runs approximately 3,300 aerodynamically efficient International ProStar trucks with 10,000 Wabash and Great Dane trailers.

"Cost savings was definitely a determining factor for us when joining SmartWay," says Jeff Bryant, the Vice President of Maintenance. "Being a green company and the emissions savings equates to money back into the bottom line. Our goal was to reach $50 savings per day per truck on idle reduction and we've hit, if not exceeded, that."

The company's investments to improve fleet fuel efficiency and slash fuel emissions have paid off with reduced annual air emissions of 23 percent for CO2, 25 percent for NOx and 19 percent for particulate matter. The company worked with ESPAR to equip trucks with auxiliary heater units that addressed the issue of burning fuel while idling eight to 10 hours per day during the winter and installed ambient sensor units that further reduced the fuel burn in late spring and early fall.

"We're very cutting edge and progressive within an industry that typically is not that way," says Vice President of Sales and Marketing Monte Horst. "Everything we implement is constantly tested."
