Leading Treatment Center Gives Advice for Overcoming Struggles in Early Recovery From Addiction

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - January 15, 2015) - There are many truths associated with recovery from an addiction. The two most important are that it is not easy and full recovery is a process that takes time.

Isolation is a common struggle associated with early recovery. Isolation can leave an individual struggling in early recovery vulnerable to old messages that keep them stuck in their disease, messages that usually stem from earlier life traumas and problems.

"When left unchecked, these old ideas can lead to old ways of coping," said Kim Dennis, MD, CEO and medical director of Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center in Lemont, Ill. "Sometimes isolation can lead to not sharing what is really going on to the people around us. Sometimes it looks like lying about how we are doing or feeling in our recovery, or staying away from those who can help us."

As early recovery can have some obstacles, Dr. Dennis offers the following advice for those struggling:

  • Don't forget the pain that finally brought you to a place of being willing to recover. If you have a hard time remembering that, it's time to go to a meeting.
  • Be smart. Don't starve yourself of recovery support, getting by on the bare minimum to keep you out of misery. Shower yourself with support so you can thrive instead of just survive.
  • Have an educated and experienced support system and take their advice.
  • Stay honest about everything; lying about even the simplest thing can lead to relapse.
  • Stay willing to do what recovery takes, and reach out for help if you feel like you don't want to or can't do what it takes to stay in recovery.

Recovery may be challenging and very difficult at times, but it is always possible. Recovery is one of the most significant and important things an individual will do in their lives.

"Everything will come into place when recovery is taken care of one day at a time," adds Dr. Dennis.
