League of California Cities Elects New Officers

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- October 8, 2005 -- The League of California Cities today announced the election of new officers to form the Executive Committee of its board of directors. The new officers were introduced at the closing general session of the League's 107th Annual Conference in San Francisco.

Los Angeles City Council Member Alex Padilla will serve as the League's president, assuming the post held for the past year by Pat Eklund, Council Member of Novato. City of Pinole Council Member Maria Alegria assumes the role of first vice president, and San Diego Council Member Jim Madaffer is joining the Executive Committee as second vice president.

"Council member Eklund has been an outstanding leader for the League of California Cities during this historic year," said League Executive Director Chris McKenzie. "Her leadership, and that of our entire Executive Committee, has been critical to our success in building strong partnerships statewide."

The League bylaws call for officers to serve one-year terms. Under the League bylaws, Eklund now becomes immediate past president of the League, and as such remains a member of the Executive Committee. Padilla moves up to his current position after serving the past year as first vice president. Alegria has been a member of the League board of directors for five years, and is the former president of the League's Latino Caucus.

Madaffer, the newest member of the Executive Committee, has served on the board of directors for five years, representing the City of San Diego. For the past year he has served as chairman of the League's Housing/General Plan Task Force.
