Lee Doney Appointed BC Forest Safety Council Co-Chair

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 25, 2006) - Lee Doney has been appointed co-chair of the BC Forest Safety Council with a two-year term that will overlap current chair Jim Shepherd's term which ends March 31, 2006. Doney was formerly a deputy minister in two B.C. government departments, chair of the Workers' Compensation Board and CEO of the Forest Renewal Board.

Doney currently is on the Board of Western Forest Products where he chairs the environment and safety committee, of the Columbia Basin Trust and manages his own consultancy firm specializing in industrial relations and negotiation including First Nations, government relations and forest policy.

In his new position, Lee Doney will help guide the activities of the BC Forest Safety Council which is funded by the industry as a partnership of forest companies, manufacturers and workers. Its mandate is to eliminate fatalities and injuries in BC's forest industry by creating a safe environment that encourages improved health and safety programs, performance and results.

He was a Deputy Minister in various provincial governments from 1987 to 2004. From 2001 to 2004, he was deputy minister of B.C. Skill Development and Labour with responsibility for Workers Compensation legislation and a new Employment Standards Act.

As deputy minister of Forests in B.C. from 1999 to 2001, Lee Doney was the lead negotiator for the Softwood Lumber Treaty with the U.S. He remodeled the coast forest stumpage system and was responsible for fire fighting and a $700 million annual budget.

The previous year, he was CEO of Forest Renewal BC - a crown corporation charged with developing $400 million in programs annually to invest in land base to increase forest productivity, restore damaged watersheds, promote value-added products and provide training and adjustment assistance.
