Legislators from Across Australia Come Together to Fight Corruption

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 22, 2012) - Legislators from around Australia and from across the political spectrum will converge in Melbourne on 23 August 2012, to join hands in the fight against corruption and the fight for integrity in government.

The Australian national chapter of the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) is hosting its inaugural working meeting of legislators. For two days, parliamentarians will engage in searching deliberations to advance anti-corruption efforts across Australia, with a particular focus on the role of independent anti-corruption commissions. Charles Chauvel, Chair of GOPAC New Zealand, will also be participating, to collaborate on a broader anti-corruption action plan for the region. Dr Lesley Burns, the GOPAC Secretariat's Global Task Force Advisor on Parliamentary Oversight, will add her international expertise to the discussion.

"GOPAC Australia is pleased to be hosting this ground breaking event, which brings together members from the federal and state parliaments," said John Hyde MLA, Chair of GOPAC Australia and convenor of the event. "Political corruption is a betrayal of democracy itself, and as legislators, we are committed to working together to defend and uphold the public trust."

John Williams, CEO of GOPAC said, "I am pleased to welcome Australia and New Zealand to the GOPAC network and look to them to take a prominent role within GOPAC to lead parliamentarians in all parts of the world in the fight against corruption."

GOPAC is a worldwide alliance of parliamentarians working together to combat corruption, strengthen good government, and uphold the rule of law. Based in Ottawa, Canada, GOPAC has 50 national chapters on 5 continents. GOPAC advances its members' efforts through original research, global anti-corruption capacity building, and international peer support.
