The London-based bank got a big boost last fall when Barclays acquired the
North American assets of Lehman Brothers Holdings, the legendary Wall
Street outfit felled by overexposure to subprime-related assets. Lehman had
been ranked No. 1 in the survey for nine straight years, through 2008, and
many of the Lehman analysts were added to BarCap's roster. The firm wins 46
total team positions in the 2009 survey; last year, as independent
entities, BarCap and Lehman captured a total of 55 positions.
In second place is J.P. Morgan, which got its own boost from the
government-backed acquisition of Bear Stearns Cos. The firm nabs 42 total
positions, six more than last year.
Banc of America Securities, strengthened by its government-sponsored
acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co., takes third place, with 34 positions.
The only firm in the top five that hasn't been involved in a merger or
acquisition is Goldman, Sachs & Co., in fourth place with 22 positions.
Wells Fargo & Co.'s December merger with Wachovia Corp. vaults Wells Fargo
Securities into the top five for the first time; the firm, with 14
positions, finishes in fifth place.
Institutional Investor's18th
annual All-America Fixed-Income
Research Team is based on responses from more than 1,600 money managers
and buy-side analysts at some 560 institutions managing an estimated $11.5
trillion in U.S. fixed-income assets.
