Leicester Accommodation Sponsors British Pie Awards

Leicester Marriott Hotel Supports Local Pie Makers as They Compete in Annual Contest

LEICESTER, ENGLAND--(Marketwired - Jul 3, 2013) - When it comes to pie, everyone wants a piece, but at the annual British Pie Awards, only one can take home the winning slice. On 24th April, 983 pie entries from across the UK went fork-to-fork in Melton Mowbray. After a day of tasting, The Pie Kitchen of Bury St Edmunds took home the Supreme Champion title with its chicken, Chantenay carrot and bacon pie.

The Leicester Marriott Hotel was proud to be part of this tradition, sponsoring the award ceremony the following day at the all-new Pie Lunch. Pies were submitted in 20 different categories including dessert, pub and pork, and each was judged on a wide range of criteria including appearance, texture and taste of both pastry and filling. More than 100 pie experts -- including top food critic Charles Campion, TV chef Rachel Green and BBC sports commentator and Melton Mowbray resident Jonathan Agnew -- had the "difficult" task of tasting the pies. Other major winners included Jeanie Marshall Foods for Small Producer of the Year and Mr C's Crafted Pies for Pie Fit for a King.

This Leicester, UK hotel is a strong advocate of both locally grown produce and independent suppliers throughout Leicestershire, so its association with the British Pie Awards was a natural partnership.

Matthew O'Callaghan, Chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, said, "The awards continue to attract more and more entries each year, and we are thrilled with the level of both expertise and enthusiasm our pie makers display. This year we thought it appropriate to celebrate all of our winners' achievements at a special Pie Lunch. Pie was of course on the menu, and we dined on the 2012 Supreme Champion Pie."

At the Pie Lunch, supported by these Leicester accommodations, the winners were honored with awards and the chance to express their excitement.

"We are bowled over and absolutely delighted," Carol Phillips of The Pie Kitchen said. "This is the second year we have entered the British Pie Awards. Last year we were awarded gold in our class, and now Supreme Champion 2013. Everything we produce is handmade, and we are genuinely passionate about our pies."
