Lens Implants for Clearer Vision: Boston Ophthalmologist Discusses the Visian ICL

Dr. Steven A. Nielsen of The Nielsen Eye Center Explains the Benefits of the Visian ICL, an Implantable Collamer Lens Designed to Significantly Reduce One's Reliance on Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Nov 3, 2015) - In the last few decades, the field of eye care and vision correction has seen some revolutionary advances. In fact, more and more individuals who suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are opting for state-of-the-art treatments that will help them see clearly without the need to constantly rely on glasses and contacts. Dr. Steven A. Nielsen, an ophthalmologist in Boston and the Quincy area, says laser vision correction procedures, such as LASIK, have given people across the U.S. a very effective way to do that. However, he notes, there is another powerful way to treat common visual refractive errors that offers many patients who may not be candidates for laser surgery a viable alternative: the Visian ICL®.

Also known as a Phakic IOL (intraocular lens), the Visian Implantable Collamer Lens® is essentially a contact lens that you never have to put in or take out -- it is surgically implanted behind the iris and in front of the eye's natural crystalline lens. Unlike laser vision correction procedures, the Visian ICL® does not require reshaping of the eye's cornea in order to better refract light onto the retina. Dr. Nielsen says the treatment is typically a rather quick and virtually painless outpatient procedure, and can be very beneficial for individuals who have:

  • Moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Thin corneas, a history of dry eye syndrome, or other factors that affect their candidacy for laser vision correction procedures
  • Large pupils

Dr. Nielsen says the Visian ICL® is also a reversible procedure. While other lens implant and Refractive Lens Exchange treatment options involve the removal of the eye's natural lens to make way for the artificial lens, the Visian ICL® is placed on top of the natural lens, which means it can be removed at a later date if necessary. Dr. Nielsen notes that the Visian ICL® offers many patients an effective way to reduce dependence on corrective eyewear.

Ultimately, Dr. Nielsen says, determining whether laser vision correction or a lens implant like the Visian ICL® is the better option depends on each individual's needs and goals. He explains that the best way to determine the ideal vision correction procedure is to see an experienced ophthalmologist and have a thorough eye evaluation. Dr. Nielsen says a comprehensive exam and an honest discussion about treatment options can help patients decide on the procedure that will give them freedom from glasses and contacts and a much clearer view of the world.
