Lenstec Expands Prescription Range for World's Most Accurate Cataract Surgery Lens

Softec HD Quarter (0.25) Diopter Precision Series Intraocular Lens (IOL) Now Available From 15.0 to 25.0 Diopters

ST. PETERSBURG, FL--(Marketwire - Aug 25, 2011) - Lenstec, Inc. -- a provider of technologically advanced lenses for treating vision disorders -- today announced that its Precision Series Softec HD Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implant for treating cataracts is available in an expanded range of prescriptions.

The newly expanded Quarter Diopter Precision Series (PS) range now covers from 15.0 to 25.0 diopters (D). When the Softec HD was approved by the FDA in April 2010, the Precision Series was limited to mid-range powers between 18.0 and 25.0 D. The expansion announced today makes the Softec HD PS available to cataract patients throughout the most popular range of prescriptions.

Lenstec improves predictability with Precision Series IOLs by reducing the manufacturing variability (i.e., tolerance or margin of error) inherent in any manufactured lens. When it comes to IOLs, variability is defined as the difference between a lens' labeled prescription and its actual power. The Softec HD PS is manufactured with a tolerance of just 0.11 D, which reduces variability up to 300 percent compared to the industry standard 0.40 D tolerance (set in accordance with less stringent ISO guidelines). This reduced variability enables surgeons to more accurately match IOLs to each cataract patient's prescription.

In addition to reducing variability, Lenstec's manufacturing process makes it possible to produce Softec HD Precision Series IOLs in non-overlapping quarter diopter (0.25 D) increments throughout the 15.0 to 25.0 D range. In contrast, most IOLs are manufactured in half diopter (0.50 D) increments that may overlap. Lenstec's superior precision offers surgeons a greater choice of lenses labeled more accurately to actual power. This in-turn means they can tailor treatment more precisely for each patient.

The full range of Softec HD IOLs extends from 5.0 to 36.0 D. More information about the Softec HD and Lenstec's Precision Series IOLs is available at

Cataract formation is among the leading causes of blindness. It is characterized by cloudy or opaque areas in the eye's natural lens that usually develop gradually with advancing age (environmental factors, metabolic diseases and certain medications can also accelerate cataract formation). Cataracts can usually be treated with surgery in which an IOL is used to replace the damaged natural crystalline lens.
