Lexington Golf Course at Griffin Gate Marriott Resort Achieves "Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program" Certification

Griffin Gate Golf Club, a popular Kentucky golf vacation destination, is recognized by Audubon for environmental stewardship

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY--(Marketwire - June 11, 2008) - Griffin Gate Golf Club, a Rees Jones designed Lexington golf course, has enhanced an already stellar 18-hole championship golf experience with recent certification by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. In order to achieve Audubon Certification, the Lexington golf course was required to demonstrate that it maintains the highest degree of environmental quality in areas including Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

Situated among the 250-acre Griffin Gate Marriott Resort, which offers luxury Kentucky lodging, Griffin Gate Golf Club is the 7th Marriott Golf operated facility to achieve Audubon Certification as part of a mandate by Marriott Golf to certify all golf properties in North America and the Caribbean in 2008. The Kentucky golf vacation destination has implemented a number of environmental stewardship programs for the certification, including the creation of bat boxes, blue-bird houses, and a butterfly garden.

As part of the initiative, the Lexington golf course worked with the local Boy Scouts of America troop in building boxes for bats, which eat up to 600 insects per hour and serve as pollinators. Additionally, twenty-five blue bird houses were strategically positioned around the property to encourage re-establishment of the species in the region, while a butterfly habitat was also developed in a native flower garden, encouraging butterflies to nest in a comfortable environment. Moreover, the Kentucky resort worked in conjunction with the Department of Fish and Wildlife to build wildlife corridors, ultimately offering wildlife the protection to move freely in specific areas on the property.

Further enhancing the Kentucky golf vacation experience, the vacation resort has completely renovated the Griffin Gate Golf Club, including refurbished locker rooms; French doors for spectacular views; the newly designed 19th Hole Restaurant; and a new patio with an expanded breakfast and lunch menu and new pro-shop. Additionally, the Lexington golf course has repaved paths, reconstructed bunkers, and re-measured and marked fairway yardage.
