LONDONDERRY, NH--(Marketwired - May 28, 2014) - Continuing its commitment to locally focused conservation and energy efficiency initiatives, Liberty Utilities today announced an incentive for a commercial laundry facility that is using an innovative polymer bead cleaning technology. Polymer bead technology washing machines can reduce natural gas usage up to 100% and water usage by up to 80%.
Traditional laundry machines used in hotels, hospitals and other commercial applications use a tremendous amount of energy to heat the water required for the cleaning process. In contrast, this new technology changes the most basic operating principles of the washing machine by replacing the massive quantities of hot water used in traditional washing machines with beads made from a special stain-absorbing polymer. By replacing water with polymer beads as the active ingredient for removing stains from fabrics, the polymer bead machines typically use upwards of 80% less water than a traditional commercial washing machine as well as lower temperatures, thus reducing the amount of natural gas that is consumed to heat water for the laundry process.
Sterling Linen Services, one of the largest commercial hospitality laundries in New England, is the first business to receive this incentive. At its Manchester, NH headquarters, Sterling Linen Services installed the Xeros Commercial Laundry System, which uses polymer bead technology. An extensive technical assistance study conducted by RISE Engineering at Sterling, included the metering of energy and water usage for the Xeros Commercial Laundry System and an industry standard machine. The Xeros polymer bead machine demonstrated a 100% reduction in natural gas usage, a 76% reduction in water usage, and reduction of the wash time by up to 28 minutes. This incredible savings secured an incentive from Liberty Utilities of $28,000 for this industrial laundry provider.
