Library and Archives Canada/Hockey: Canada's Royal Winter Game/A Rare Book, Now Digitized

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Dec. 11, 2006) -

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is excited to announce the launch of the digitized version of Arthur Farrell's book Hockey: Canada's Royal Winter Game, a special addition to the virtual exhibition Backcheck: A Hockey Retrospective.

This fragile 1899 handbook is thought to be the first book ever written about hockey, and is one of only four copies known to exist. The Right Honourable Prime Minister Stephen Harper loaned the book to LAC for digitization, so that it would made available online to all hockey enthusiasts. LAC provided much-needed conservation work on the document prior to its digitization, ensuring that generations to come will enjoy this rare piece of Canadiana.

Enjoy reading Hockey: Canada's Royal Winter Game during the holiday season and find out more about our national game from our two popular websites: Backcheck: A Hockey Retrospective and Backcheck: Hockey for Kids.
