TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 7, 2013) - It is no secret that depression remains largely untreated during pregnancy. This may be attributed in part to patients and their doctors being unsure of the effect of antidepressant medication on the fetus.
During pregnancy, a woman's hormones are playing havoc with her body as the baby develops. The reality is that she is dealing with a lot of mental shifts associated with the many lifechanging roles she is about to take on. No longer is she just a careerwoman and wife═╛ in addition she now has the responsibility of being primary caregiver for another human being, or two - if she is pregnant with multiples!
These stresses and strains continue, even more intensely so, after birth. During this postpartum period, the idyllic mental image of mother and quiet cooing baby fades as she exists in a sleepdeprived state of anxiety as she tries, sometimes unsuccessfully so, to soothe a crying colicky baby. To make matters worse this mother is often by herself if she does not have the advantage of having family nearby who can lend a hand.
This is where groups like Life With A Baby make a difference. Year after year, participants have reported that LWAB has helped them to ease different anxieties and stresses associated with motherhood. A study to evaluate LWAB's performance revealed that peer support and an increase in social networks correlated with participation in the program that was run and led by peers.
