LifePics Deploys BlueArc Solution for High Resolution Storage Demands

Online Imaging Service Hosts Millions of Images for Photofinishers and Photographers

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - February 26, 2008) - BlueArc® Corporation, a leader in scalable, high-performance unified network storage, today announced that LifePics has deployed a dual BlueArc Titan 2200 solution. As the volume of digital photos -- and photo printing -- soars with the proliferation of digital cameras, LifePics knew that they needed to dramatically boost the performance and cost-effectiveness of its tiered storage infrastructure. A market leader in online imaging solutions for photofinishers and professional photographers, LifePics now relies on BlueArc technology to help ensure its data-intensive operations can scale -- while keeping demands on its IT staff to a minimum.

LifePics provides online photo storage and processing services for some of the biggest retail brands and professional photographers. According to market research firm InfoTrends, approximately 19.7 billion photo images will be printed in 2008, and by 2012, approximately half of all printed images will be ordered using the Internet-to-retail printing model. LifePics has already experienced dramatic increases in Internet-to-retail order volume, and the addition of the BlueArc Titan 2200 solution has significantly improved the manageability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of image storage.

"LifePics stores millions and millions of images free of charge for our customers, and the BlueArc storage solution truly shines as the core component of our unique storage and image architecture," said Ron Parker, director of site operations, LifePics. "BlueArc has made it easy for us to use a mix of storage types cost-effectively, while customers and their end users get the efficient service and image quality they expect."

Single Platform for Speed, Scalability, Manageability

Because images are held until a consumer deletes them, time-intensive maintenance of legacy storage prompted Parker to search for ways to improve system manageability. LifePics' previous architecture did not scale nearly as efficiently as the new tiered storage model.

BlueArc offers storage capacity, unified interface, tiered storage, online management and highly responsive technical support, comprehensive capabilities that Parker could not find combined in a single solution from another vendor. The BlueArc Titan 2200 affords federated management of 160 terabytes of customer content held in multiple tiers of storage, including legacy NSM storage, Fibre Channel for low-resolution images hosted on the Web, and serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) storage for high-resolution images that are more than 90 days old -- after which consumers tend to access them less frequently. And the ease of changing or adding a tray to the BlueArc Titan solution's distinctive hardware-based architecture allows for simple upgrades to LifePics' storage infrastructure.

Because BlueArc lets LifePics write images to different storage locations, LifePics has gained back-end flexibility that is crucial to seasonal changes in demand for image printing.

"We view BlueArc as more than just our storage vendor. BlueArc is a true partner in the success of our customers," said Parker. "We're not just looking to scale another 100 terabytes; we anticipate we'll need to scale to 1 to 5 petabytes at the rate that our business is growing. I'm confident BlueArc will help us get there."
