Lincoln County Humane Society and Ontario SPCA Announce Partnership to Open a High-Volume Spay/Neuter Clinic

ST. CATHARINES, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 11, 2012) - In a joint effort to help reduce the pet over-population crisis in Ontario, The Lincoln County Humane Society (LCHS) and the Ontario SPCA announce a partnership to open a high-volume spay/neuter clinic in St. Catharines, Ontario.

The one-year pilot project will establish a high-volume spay/neuter service fully open to the community, specifically aimed at reducing the over-population of cats, offering assistance to surrounding Ontario SPCA communities and assisting volunteers working with feral cat colonies.

"The Lincoln County Humane Society euthanasia rates have gone down over 20% with our progressive and creative adoption programs," said Kevin Strooband, Executive Director of the Lincoln County Humane Society, referring to the highly successful adoption events in September, where over 100 animals were adopted. "This high-volume spay/neuter model will only help reduce it further."

LCHS has a CVO accredited Companion Animal Hospital within their Humane Society.

"Pet overpopulation is at crisis levels in Ontario. The Ontario SPCA and LCHS encourage the public to fix their pets and help reduce overpopulation levels across the province," said Tanya Firmage, Director of Animal Welfare Operations Ontario SPCA.

The LCHS spay/neuter clinic is located at 160 Fourth Avenue, in south-west St. Catharines and will begin services December 2012. The clinic welcomes the public, shelters and rescue groups, regardless of geography or income level.

Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up homeless on the street or orphaned every year. Having your pet spayed or neutered will directly address this problem. Pet overpopulation also contributes to the cycle of neglect and abuse.

Spaying/neutering pets will also reduce health risks and physical stress, and improve behaviour in your pet. Fixed pets are also less likely to roam, reducing the risk of injury, accident and loss.
