Liposuction in High Demand in China

In Light of the Increasing Demand for Liposuction in China, SpaMedica Owner Dr. Stephen Mulholland Recently Travelled There to Teach New and Innovative Liposuction Techniques to Chinese Plastic Surgeons

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - August 11, 2014) - China is the world's third largest market for cosmetic surgery with over one million cosmetic surgery procedures performed in 2011 according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Liposuction was the most popular procedure in China in 2011, but more recent statistics are difficult to obtain on China's cosmetic surgery market. However, prominent Chinese plastic surgeons have told Dr. Mulholland, a Toronto cosmetic surgeon, that their liposuction practices have increased over 100% in the last three to five years. Dr. Mulholland was recently invited to China to teach advanced liposuction techniques to Chinese plastic surgeons who comment that the demand for liposuction in China is skyrocketing.

Dr. Mulholland travelled to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hong Kong to participate in hands-on BodyTite workshops. In these cities, he gave lectures on SmartLipo (laser-assisted liposuction) and BodyTite (radiofrequency-assisted liposuction) and worked with Chinese plastic surgeons in the OR to treat patients with BodyTite.

"Some of the popularity for liposuction in China is due to the rise in central, gyneoid pattern obesity as we can see in the west. With changing dietary habits, fast food chains and less exercise, Chinese women are more prone to local fat collections like western women," says Dr. Mulholland.

Another reason for the dramatic increase in liposuction in China is due to modern thermal liposuction techniques such as SmartLipo and BodyTite. These new liposuction techniques deliver controlled heat to the fat tissue which turns the fat into a liquefied state. This makes fat removal gentler and results in less pain and swelling than traditional liposuction. Additionally, since the heat closes off small blood vessels, patients experience less bruising than ever before.

Dr. Mulholland says an important thing for Chinese women is that liposuction techniques such as SmartLipo and BodyTite can result in 17-35% soft tissue contraction. "Chinese patients who are very adverse to scars and traditional excisional surgery -- like tummy tucks, neck lifts and arm lifts -- can get significant contraction through these liposuction techniques that are performed under local anesthesia without the stigma of a scar or extensive surgical technique," says Dr. Mulholland.
