The Lippis Report and Ixia Complete Second Round of 10GE Open Networking Performance and Power Tests for Data Center Clouds

Ixia's iSimCity Hosts Lippis Report 10GE Tests for Industry's Only Comparative Report on 10GE Switch Performance and Power Consumption

CALABASAS, CA--(Marketwire - May 26, 2011) - Ixia (NASDAQ: XXIA), the leading, global provider of converged IP network test solutions, and The Lippis Report today announced the completion of the second round of a series of open industry data center network performance and power consumption tests. The tests will provide the industry with comparative performance and power consumption data across several 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) switch devices. These tests are the first of their kind, and provide network stakeholders with real-world data that compares and contrasts different 10GE equipment manufacturer products for data center fabrics.

The testing, which took place at Ixia's iSimCity proof-of-concept lab location in Santa Clara, Ca., used Ixia's Xcellon-Flex load modules to evaluate the performance of the participating vendors' top-of-the-line 10GE data center devices. The testing is also the first to adhere to the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) telecommunications energy efficiency ratio (TEER) standards, a comprehensive assessment that provides a more precise measurement of equipment's energy efficiency.

In conjunction with this second round results, Ixia and The Lippis Report also announce a new round of testing for Fall 2011. The Fall round will extend the testing methodology to include 40GE fabrics, additional test cases for benchmarking latency under different traffic conditions, equal-cost multi-path (ECMP) scalability, and buffering capabilities. Data center evolution, spurred by complex traffic mixes and higher-bandwidth needs, requires combined 10GE and 40GE equipment that doesn't over-consume resources. This newest set of tests is the first in the industry to compare vendor performance using standardized testing methodologies.

Supporting Quotes:

  • "These industry tests are fundamental to understanding the performance, latency, and virtualization capabilities of 10GE and 40GE data center switches in conjunction with their power consumption," said Nick Lippis, publisher of The Lippis Report. "As Ethernet becomes the fabric for cloud networking, independent, repeatable, reliable, and comparable test results provide assurance to IT business leaders that they are acquiring equipment that will perform well in their specific deployment."

  • "Data centers moving to cloud-based paradigms require 10GE and 40GE equipment that delivers unfailing performance without over-consuming resources," said Tara Van Unen, senior manager, market development at Ixia. "Ixia's iSimCity enables companies such as The Lippis Report to test city-scale networking devices and infrastructure to ensure not only equipment performance, but also how the devices behave under real-world networks."
