Listen Takes Home Three Cannes Lions Prizes for Sound, Brand Environment & Interactive Design

NYC-Based Music Marketing and Branding Agency Awarded a Gold Design Lion and Two Silver Design Lions for Their Work on the DELQA Installation

CANNES, FRANCE --(Marketwired - June 21, 2016) - New York City sound branding and music marketing agency Listen has won the prestigious Gold Cannes Design Lion award for Sound Design and two Silver Design Lions for Spatial Brand Installation & Experience and Digital Installations & Events -- all for its work on DELQA, an installation incorporating Microsoft Kinect technology and the music of Matthew Dear to transform the way listeners interact with music. Listen co-founders Steve Milton and Brett Volker collected the awards during today's Cannes Lions award ceremony in Cannes, France.

DELQA was an interactive installation that allowed the audience to physically go inside music created by critically acclaimed music producer and artist Matthew Dear. It was featured at New York City's New Museum in 2015. A large aluminum frame with mesh walls housed a 44-channel spatial audio system that allowed people to experience the installation in 3D. As people interacted physically with the mesh fabric around them, Microsoft's motion-sensing Kinect technology detected their movements and shaped the composition in real time, essentially allowing people to create their own version of the song.

"Our shared vision was to create a dynamic and immersive environment that would push the relationship between music and technology, blurring the lines between creator and audience," said Steve Milton, founding co-partner of Listen. "We were privileged to collaborate with Matthew Dear and Microsoft to realize this vision, and we're thrilled now with the recognition of this project by the Cannes Lions jury. These awards are an incredible honor for everyone at Listen."

The Design Lions celebrate visual craftsmanship. In order to qualify, entrants had to demonstrate that their design has been used to define a brand or communicate its key messages. To do that, Listen worked with Microsoft to find opportunities where their technology could empower the music ecosystem by creating roles for their products that would improve brand perception, particularly among cultural influencers and creators in the music and technology communities. Due to overwhelming response to the concept, Listen is continuing to work with artists like Alt-J and Floating Points to bring new versions of the installation to festivals, events and museums around the world.
