Little Rock Huntington Learning Center Joins Arkansas Commitment to Offer ACT Prep

LITTLE ROCK, AR--(Marketwire - Jul 30, 2012) - Huntington Learning Center of Little Rock recently partnered with Arkansas Commitment -- a nonprofit leadership development program for African-American students in central Arkansas -- to offer ACT preparation for 40 high school students.

Huntington ran the program from January to April, first assessing each individual student's strengths and weaknesses, then breaking into smaller groups to target different subject areas. The students sat for the ACT April 14, and the average score increase among the students -- from Huntington's initial practice exam to the actual test -- was 3.79 points. One student had an 11-point increase, and more than half of the students increased their score by at least four points.

The 2013 Arkansas Commitment class of 40 students -- all juniors -- was made up of 22 high schools. According to Jason Hamilton, executive director, last year's class (2012) received more than $825,000 in scholarship funds for each year of college. "The class of 2013 cohort was our largest yet, and we wanted to help the students earn the best possible test scores so they have the opportunity to get into selective schools and receive scholarship assistance," said Hamilton. "What appealed to us most about Huntington is the individualized nature of Huntington's ACT prep program. They were able to analyze where students needed the most help and customize the program for each student. Huntington also provides students study skills and tips that they can use long after the ACT. We were very pleased with the instructors and their commitment to our students."

"We're so excited to offer programs like this to great organizations like Arkansas Commitment," said Cindi Justice, program director of the Little Rock Huntington Learning Center. "These students had barriers to overcome, but they still committed themselves to the program and worked very hard. I'm very proud of them and the results they achieved."
