Live Webcast Presentation: Automated Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator Procedure

From Halifax Health Medical Center, February 19, 2009 at 7:00 PM EST

DAYTONA BEACH, FL--(Marketwire - February 3, 2009) - The Halifax Health - Center for Cardiology will present a live online panel discussion on an Automated Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator surgical case on Thursday, February 19 at 7:00 pm.

A majority of the 200,000 - 400,000 people that die suddenly in the United States each year do so as a result of heart rhythm abnormalities known as ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation. An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a battery-powered device that significantly improves the chances of survival in people at high risk for these arrhythmias. Modern ICDs are sophisticated devices that are able to perform three general functions: treatment of dangerous ventricular arrhythmias, record the heart's activity in the device memory, and standard pacemaker functions.

Halifax Health's Hanscy Seide, MD, Director of Electrophysiology, Donald Stoner, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Matt Petkus, Director of Cardiac Services, will discuss a pre-recorded surgical case with online viewers. Members of the community are also invited to join them in the Halifax Health Medical Center of Daytona Beach auditorium and have the opportunity to go through the procedure step-by-step and meet key members of the cardiology team. Dr. Seide, who is with the Daytona Heart Group, has implanted more than 400 defibrillators during the past three years. He is also the only fellowship trained electrophysiologist in the Greater Daytona Beach area.

"Halifax Health continues to lead the way in patient outcomes and clinical procedures," said Dr. Stoner. "This effort is just another way that we are able to showcase our modern technology and medical talent to our community."

Halifax Health Medical Center is the first and only medical center in Central Florida to be certified by The Joint Commission as a Center of Excellence in Acute Myocardial Infarction care and has been named one of the Top 100 Cardiac Hospitals in the country.

The discussion may be viewed at halifaxhealth.org or the public is invited to attend a viewing at Halifax Health Medical Center's auditorium. To reserve a seat at the public viewing at Halifax Health Medical Center, please call 877.8.HALIFAX.
