Foundation Also Debuts Cancer Hacks, Its Innovative Engagement Tool Designed to Help People Conquer Cancer's Daily Burdens by Drawing Upon Expert Knowledge and Real-Life Experiences

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Nov 20, 2013) - The LIVESTRONG Foundation today launched its provocative new "Daily Cures" campaign, which telegraphs the Foundation's call for the U.S. cancer care system to be more supportive of people living with cancer now and underscores its belief that the focus on a future cure has held the cancer community back from finding needed solutions today. A highlight of the campaign is the Foundation's new Cancer Hacks tool -- -- a unique technology engagement platform that for the first time curates the Foundation's expert knowledge about dealing with cancer's daily burdens and combines it with "hacks" -- or tips and solutions -- submitted by people around the world who have their own "daily cures" for conquering these challenges, to create a constantly evolving, crowd-sourced conversation about living with cancer.

The launch of the Daily Cures campaign follows the release of the Institute of Medicine's landmark 2013 report, "Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a New Course for a System in Crisis," which highlights major shortfalls in patient engagement in the current cancer care system and reinforces the need to close these gaps, especially since cancer incidences are expected to rise dramatically. Consistent with the 16-year-old Foundation's mission to put the needs of those living with cancer today at the center of its work, Daily Cures seeks more balance in cancer resource allocation, so that improving day-to-day quality of life -- "daily cures" -- for people living with the disease is recognized as being of equal importance to the scientific search for a future cure.

The Daily Cures campaign highlights the importance of this work through online advertisements, sponsored content and digital discussions in targeted local outlets and on social media platforms. The Foundation is leading the conversation about how to see this change become a reality, and seeks to raise awareness on the need for more patient-centered care and more support for people needing "daily cures" to tackle the disease.

The Daily Cures campaign will eventually encompass a series of related programs. This includes Cancer Hacks -- the new tool inspired by the LIVESTRONG Foundation's experience providing direct support services to those affected by cancer, but brought to life by adding in others' real-world experiences. It will result in a powerful community in which people living with cancer can both give and find critical help.

Examples of the solutions included in Cancer Hacks are: Track your mileage to and from treatments to get a tax rebate; create a private Twitter account for friends and family to follow your quick updates instead of worrying about long emails; cure stuffy noses from swollen blood vessels with an ice cube pressed against the roof of your mouth; avoid paying bills on a credit card because if the bill is wrong, your fight becomes one with the credit card company instead of the health care provider; and host a "Mr./Mrs. Right" party with your friends to go through donor profiles in the fertility preservation process.

As the Foundation moves forward into the next phase of its work, it is focused on activities that will be most fruitful in transforming the cancer care ecosystem into a more patient-centered enterprise. In the coming months, the Foundation will announce plans to strengthen its existing efforts with new partnerships and programs; advocate for meaningful policy change; and build online tools and products that directly benefit those living with cancer.
