Living Beyond Breast Cancer to Host Community Meetings

Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk -- What You Need to Know

HAVERFORD, PA--(Marketwired - March 26, 2014) - Living Beyond Breast Cancer (LBBC) has joined with University of Pennsylvania's Basser Research Center for BRCA and The Jewish Women's Foundation Women of Vision of Greater Philadelphia to host two local community meetings on Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Risk. The first meeting will take place on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Main Line Reform Temple from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. and the second event will take place at Tiferet Bet Israel on Sunday, April 6, 2014 from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. During the meetings, Rebecca Mueller, MS, CGC, CCRC, of the University of Pennsylvania's Basser Research Center for BRCA, will provide attendees with information about hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and who may be at an increased genetic risk.

"Research has shown that women and men of Ashkenazi Jewish decent are at an increased risk of carrying a BRCA gene mutation," stated Catherine L. Ormerod, MSS, MLSP, LBBC's Vice President of Programs and Partnerships. "Rebecca Mueller's presentation will help those attending better understand the process of genetic counseling and testing, learn the criteria for insurance coverage of genetic testing and develop strategies for talking about genetic risk and test results with family."

Ms. Mueller is certified in genetic counseling and she coordinates the outreach mission of the Basser Research Center for BRCA, which involves developing educational programming and materials, increasing access to education and support, and serving as a liaison to related organizations. She also provides cancer genetic counseling to patients in the Cancer Risk Evaluation Program through a telemedicine study. It aims to increase access to cancer genetics services through implementation of telemedicine technology at community hospitals.
